Barlby Primary School

KS1 and KS2 Curriculum

All children from Year 1 to 6 follow the 2014 National Curriculum which covers English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, History, Geography, Music, Physical Education (PE), Design Technology, Art and Design. In addition to the National Curriculum we teach Personal, Social, Health, Education (PSHE), Religious Education (RE) and Spanish at Barlby.

In KS1, the school morning follows the structure of Guided Reading, Literacy, Phonics, Handwriting and Maths. There is a strong focus on the development of synthetic phonics for reading, writing and spelling, alongside the development of letter formation and cursive handwriting. In KS2, the school day begins with Guided Reading, followed by Literacy, Guided Maths and Maths. Handwriting sessions are also carried out several times a week.

Afternoon topic learning is delivered through our Wider Curriculum, which ensures foundation subjects are taught creatively, with strong cross curricular links. Curriculum topics are linked to children’s interests such as Dinosaurs (Year 1) and Stargazers (Year 5). These topics are also entwined with core subject learning.

Our curriculum Statement of Intent

Our aim is to provide our children with an engaging, exciting and empowering curriculum that equips them for today and tomorrow.

At Barlby Primary School the curriculum is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our diverse school community. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values with a vision to prepare them for life beyond primary school. We constantly provide enrichment opportunities to engage learning. We believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives, where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.  We use our Barlby Values (Determination, Creativity and Respect) to promote positive attitudes to learning which reflect the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future success.

Community involvement is an integral part of our curriculum, inviting families and visitors to facilitate learning new skills and sharing experiences such as assemblies, curriculum outcomes and International Food Evening and Community Day.

Children leave Barlby with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.

The Wider Curriculum

At Barlby, our curriculum is underpinned by our values creativity, determination and respect.

We aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is delivered through rich, imaginative and cross-curricular learning that will inspire children. We offer a curriculum which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all children, whatever their starting point, as they progress through each Key Stage.

The curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum 2014 and other experiences and opportunities which best meet the learning and developmental needs of the pupils in our school. The aim of our curriculum is for pupils to have the skills to be motivated, successful, and independent lifelong learners. At our school, we are proud to offer a rich and engaging wider curriculum that supports the development of the whole child. We follow carefully selected schemes of work that ensure coverage of the National Curriculum objectives and provide high-quality learning experiences across all subjects.

  • Art, Computing, PSHE, Spanish, and Design Technology are taught using the Kapow Primary schemes of work. These schemes are designed to be creative, inclusive, and progressive, helping children build knowledge and skills year-on-year.

  • Science is delivered through the White Rose Science scheme of learning, which supports a mastery approach and encourages curiosity, investigation, and deep understanding of scientific concepts.

  • PE (Physical Education) follows the GetSet4PE scheme, which promotes physical literacy, teamwork, and a lifelong love of movement and sport.

  • RE (Religious Education) is taught in accordance with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea SACRE (Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education), ensuring that children learn about a range of religions and world views in a respectful and inclusive way.

These schemes help us provide a broad and balanced curriculum that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and personal development.
